Global Travel Statistics

With a resurgence of international travel post-COVID, here are the latest global travel statistics showing the number of people who travel each year, where they travel to, and the impact of these travels.

Overall Travel Volume

According to UN Tourism, global travels reached an estimated 1.4 billion tourists in 2024. This is higher than the figure for global travel in 2023 by 140 million.

In 2023, an estimated 975 million tourists engaged in international travel between January and September 2023. This figure is a 38% increase from the records for 2022 across the same months.

Growth of Tourism over the past Decade

The tourism industry has experienced the most massive growth over the past decades, until 2019, just before the coronavirus outbreak, with global tourism figures reaching 1.5 billion.

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, international tourism grew by 4% yearly from 2010 to 2019, reaching 1.5 billion by the end of 2019.

This growth was brought about by an increase in how many tourists travel each year among middle-class citizens and emerging markets like Asia, Latin America and Africa.

However, the pandemic caused a massive decline in global travel by 74% in 2020. The industry began to show signs of recovery in 2021 and 2022, as international travel rebounded by 58% in 2021.

With the improvements experienced in 2022 to 2024, it is projected that by 2025, global tourism will surpass pre-pandemic levels.
