Maui Airport Guide (OGG)

Whether you have a lightning-fast connection, an overnight layover or a whole day to spare, this Travel Code Maui Airport Guide brings together every nugget of practical information you’ll need. Scroll for lounges, Wi-Fi instructions, charging spots, 24-hour eats, mosquito hacks, airport hotels, onward transport and much more.

OGG Airport Overview

What to Expect

Maui-Kahului Airport (IATA: OGG) is compact, partially open-air and—thanks to a recent renovation—surprisingly pleasant. One long concourse threads through the terminal and holds a decent line-up of eateries and local-made souvenir shops. Most concessions shutter by 10:00 PM, though a handful of flex their hours to match peak flight banks. Free Wi-Fi covers the whole building, and a faster paid tier is available for streaming or last-minute work calls. If you crave extra comfort, day passes to Hawaiian Airlines’ small Premier Club are sold at the door, subject to capacity.

Sleeping in Maui Airport

After TSA checkpoints close, everyone is shepherded into the open-air baggage claim rotunda. Seating there is mostly stone benches; creative sleepers report curling up on wheelchairs or even inside empty luggage carts. Bring insect repellent—the island mosquitoes love red-eye passengers as much as they love plumeria. A sleeping mat, earplugs and a hoodie will go a long way against the hard benches, looping Hawaiian music and the night breeze. If that sounds grim, skip the bivouac and grab a five-minute shuttle to a hotel; we list the closest options below.

Recent traveler feedback is pooled in our airport reviews. Got a new tip? Update the guide so fellow passengers benefit.

Airport Hours

Doors unlock roughly 90 minutes before the day’s first departure and click shut about half an hour after the final arrival. Exact times vary with seasonal schedules, so plan accordingly.

Rest & Relaxation Zones

OGG has no designated “quiet room” or nap pod yet. If you stumble across a hidden soft seat, let us know!

Cots

The airport does not hand out cots to stranded travellers. If that changes, please drop us a line.

Food & Drinks

No concession is genuinely 24/7, but Starbucks in the ticketing lobby and baggage claim usually opens 05:30–22:30. You’ll also find Lahaina Chicken Co., Sammy’s Beach Bar & Grill, Pizza Paradiso and Pau Hana Market sprinkled along the concourse. Hours contract after the dinner wave.

Luggage Storage & Lockers

Storage lockers remain unavailable due to TSA rules. Surfboard and oversized-gear rental outlets in Kahului town can watch bulky items for a fee.

Mobile Charging

Free 110 V outlets line the pillars at Gates 17 and 37. Combination USB-A/USB-C ports were added in 2024.

Showers

No public showers inside the terminal. Day rates at Courtyard Maui include access to their fitness-center showers.

Wi-Fi / Internet

Select “OGG-FreeWiFi” and watch a 30-second tourism clip to receive two hours at 5 Mbps. Upgrade to 50 Mbps for US $6.95/day.

Security & Safety

Sleeping in any public space carries risk. To minimise issues:

  • Stay visible. Position yourself near other overnighters or within CCTV range.
  • Secure your gear. Loop a cable lock through your bag or hug it while you snooze. Petty theft has been reported.
  • Know the exits. The Airport District police sub-station sits landside beside baggage carousel 3; ask officers for safest corners.
  • Stay awake if uneasy. Grab a Kona coffee and power-nap on the plane instead.
